About Us
Early VHNA efforts from 1971-1973 centered around building community in the neighbourhood, advertising events such as Street Dances and Corn Roasts, and campaigning for some early play equipment for the young Gzowski Park. An early achievement for the Association was the introduction of a children’s Playschool that was organized and staffed by community volunteers. In a newly built part of Kitchener, these social initiatives must have been a crucial way for neighbours to meet one another and to build a sense of pride in and for Victoria Hills.
Throughout the 1970s, VHNA organized community fitness programs, helped lead the way in running the community skating rink, and led a wide variety of fundraising events for a range of local causes. Operating largely out of what was then known as Hillside Public School, the VHNA of the 1980s worked on expanding their operations, and having a community centre to operate out of was a goal that the Association pursued throughout the decade. When construction of the VHCC began in the late 1980s, the VHNA had been an key influence in helping that development along. The opening of the VHCC in 1991 allowed the VHNA to have a permanent shared office space as a home base. We’ve been proudly calling the Centre home ever since.
